One application. Modules for what a school has to do.

Invigilo is the software a school installs. Vigila is the exam module inside it: it runs the exam under the rules that apply to it, and leaves a record a teacher can act on. LUCA, the school’s study model, is in development.

AI policy

The rules come from two places. Invigilo enforces both.

Four levels

From a closed exam to full AI. At exams and the large written projects, the exam regulations prohibit AI chatbots, so the level there is 0 or 1. For teaching and the school’s own assignments, the school sets the level itself.

Level 0

No aids. AI services and lookup services are blocked, and any text pasted in from outside is flagged.

Level 1

Internet access is permitted. AI services are blocked, and services on the subject watch list are logged.

Level 2

AI is permitted and documented: every visit to and paste from an AI service is logged with time and source, so use can be reconciled against the student’s own declaration.

Level 3

AI is part of the task. Only a light audit trail is kept: which services were used, not every single visit.

Deviation per exam

Any exam can deviate from the school’s default, within what the exam regulations allow. Tightening a single subject to a closed paper is a setting, not a project.

Declared AI as attribution

Where AI is permitted, meaning in teaching and in the school’s own assignments, the rule trace becomes an attribution: which service, how much was pasted, and whether it was edited afterwards. The teacher can reconcile it against the student’s own declaration.

The student sees the rules first

Same application, same exam day. Only the rules change, and the student is shown them before the exam starts.

The exam regulations prohibit AI chatbots at exams and at the large written projects, including preparation time with internet access. There the level is not the school’s to pick: it is level 0 or 1, and Invigilo enforces it and documents that it held. Levels 2 and 3 are the school’s own call, for teaching and for the school’s own assignments.

Vigila

Scheduled start
The exam can be set to open automatically at a time the exam leader chooses. The decision can be reversed until recording begins.
Seating chart of the room
The invigilator sees the room from above, seat by seat. A flagged seat jumps to the top immediately.
Curated deny list
A maintained list of AI and paraphrasing services ships with every exam. The school can add its own domains.
Offline operation
If the network goes down, the application stores everything locally and encrypted. The exam is still valid.
One application, downloaded once
Students download Invigilo once, macOS and Windows, or the school rolls the application out centrally for a whole class. It sleeps between exams and always shows whether it is recording.

Findings and review

The system points. The teacher decides.

Rule engine with traces
Every finding shows the rule’s steps: what was pasted, when, and why it was flagged.
Advisory language model
A model we host ourselves in the EU can assess whether a pasted passage resembles the student’s other writing. Always advisory, never decisive.
A human decides
No flag becomes a decision before a teacher has seen it. No monitoring tool can make cheating impossible; what the module delivers is a record a human can act on.
Summary per seat
Today a teacher reads through raw event logs, one student at a time, and writes the summary themselves. Vigila delivers one document per seat instead, with every finding and the teacher’s status. Word or PDF, ready for an integrity case.

Security and access

Less collected, less to protect.

Existing sign-ins: Students and staff sign in with what they already have: the school’s login and a national eID such as BankID, iDIN or the German Personalausweis. No new passwords.
Masking at capture time: The address bar and bookmarks are blurred out on the student’s computer before anything is sent.
Special exam accommodations: Screenshots are turned off entirely for students with accommodations.
Automatic deletion: The evidence is deleted when the appeal deadline expires. Built in, not a checklist.
The data-protection authority's ruling, April 2024: The authority approved exam proctoring and criticised one thing: the software collected more than intended. Invigilo strips that away on the student’s machine before anything is sent.

The next modules.

VigilaWindows for long-form assignments: Long assignments are monitored in bounded windows the student opens and closes. Only one window at a time, and nothing is collected between them.
VigilaWindows stitched at submission: All of an assignment’s windows are stitched into one timeline, and gaps over 48 hours are flagged for the teacher’s review. Retention is counted from the last window, because the appeal deadline runs from the grading of the whole assignment.
LUCAThe school’s study model: Our own language model, hosted in the EU, running under the same policy the exams do. In development: no date and no price yet.
